Russian beginners: module 1

About this course

The course introduces the Cyrillic alphabet, Russian pronunciation, essential vocabulary and sentence structure. Learners work on greetings, introductions, personal information and talking about family and friends, while reading simple texts about the present. Teaching centres on spoken interaction, with pair and group practice, role plays and language games. Russian is used as much as possible in class, with English where needed. The course also includes cultural context relating to Moscow, St Petersburg, Russian names, and Russian-language poets and writers.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for complete beginners and does not require previous knowledge of Russian. Learners should be prepared to practise spoken language with other students through group activities, role plays and games. Homework is recommended to consolidate work covered in class.
