About this course

The course introduces screen preparation and printing through demonstrations, presentations, group discussions and individual technical guidance. Participants will stretch screens, create paper stencils from cut or torn shapes, and use mono printing methods to develop images. The course also covers coating screens with photo-emulsion, exposing photographic, digital or hand-drawn images, and combining these with registration and overprinting. Learners will develop layered prints using different methods and colours, with regular tutor feedback on technical and creative decisions.

Is this course right for you?

The course is suitable for complete beginners because no previous printmaking experience is necessary. An interest in, or experience of, drawing or design may be helpful. Learners with some prior experience can also use the course to renew their knowledge of printmaking techniques.

• Includes both group teaching and individual one-to-one guidance.
• Participation involves discussions and sharing experiences with other learners.
• Learners with mobility issues should contact the department before enrolling because the print studio is not wheelchair accessible.

Before you go

• Participants are asked to bring their own tools and drawing equipment, such as paintbrushes, along with a sketchbook or notebook.
• Protective clothing and rubber gloves are advisable.
• Most studio consumables, including ink, cleaning materials and solvents, are included. Paper, etching plates and lino blocks are not included and are available through the department.
• Health and safety procedures are explained at the start of the course, and participants must agree to follow them.
• Some chemicals may be harmful during pregnancy or cause irritation. Participants should inform the tutor about pregnancy or sensitivities so precautions can be advised.
• The print studios are on the second and third floors, with no wheelchair access.
