About this course

The course introduces Lindy Hop through basic rhythms, six-count patterns and movement between open and closed positions. Learners practise lead and follow roles, develop figures such as the Swing Out, and combine them with a partner while adapting to different partners. Teaching combines warm-ups, tutor demonstrations, whole-group practice and partnered work. Film clips of vintage or contemporary swing dancers provide starting points for discussion about social dance etiquette, styling and the dance’s African American roots.

What you'll learn

  • Perform foundational Lindy Hop figures, including the Swing Out
  • Use six-count rhythms to move between open and closed positions
  • Combine learned figures into a social dance with a partner
  • Apply lead and follow roles with different partners
  • Recognise key aspects of Lindy Hop’s roots and contemporary social dance etiquette

Is this course right for you?

Designed for people new to swing dance, those revisiting its fundamentals, or learners wishing to develop a different lead or follow role. Participation involves dancing with a partner in close proximity and rotating between different partners. A reasonable level of fitness is required.

  • No previous experience is required
  • Learners should be comfortable dancing with another person in close physical proximity
  • The course rotates partners, so participants should be willing to dance with different people
  • Lead and follow roles are open to everyone and do not depend on gender

Before you go

  • Wear comfortable shoes with a low or flat heel that allow free movement; trainers are not suitable.
  • Bring water and a notepad. Learners may also make their own text or video notes.
  • Tell the tutor about any physical restrictions before the course begins.
