About this course
The course examines the growth of Christianity within the Roman Empire, the collapse of Roman rule in the West and the successor states that emerged. Topics include Constantine, Julian the Apostate, Theodosius I and II, the fall of Rome, Justinian and Theodora, the Carolingian Empire, the rise of Islam and the Ottonian Empire. Teaching combines weekly talks supported by PowerPoint with class discussion, small-group analysis of original sources and handout-based activities. Occasional short homework readings may extend the topics covered in class.
