About this course
The course introduces the fundamentals of violin or viola playing, including instrument and bow handling, posture, movement, fingering and tone production. Learners work on intonation, simple tunes, rhythms and major scales beginning on open strings, alongside reading and writing basic music notation. Teaching combines tutor explanations and demonstrations with group playing, individual practice, class discussion, aural work and relevant music theory. The course is designed as the first stage of a sequence leading to Violin and viola 1B.

This course is intended for complete beginners learning violin or viola. Participation includes tutor-led work, group playing, individual practice, class discussion and aural activities. Learners need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and take part in discussions.

- Bring a pen, pencil, eraser and notepad.
