About this course

The course develops violin technique through repertoire, scales and technical exercises, with work on posture, left-hand positions, bow control, intonation, tone and preparation for vibrato. Learners play both individually and in groups, supported by tutor demonstrations and explanations. Class activities also include clapping, singing, listening, note-taking and discussion. Progress is reviewed against the course outcomes, with learners setting personal targets and tracking practice tasks between sessions.

  • Maintain improved posture and recognise ways to address physical tension and strain.
  • Use effective left-hand positioning across first, second and third positions.
  • Control the bow through legato and staccato strokes, with improved bow distribution and dynamics.
  • Improve intonation and tone production.
  • Practise preparation exercises for vibrato.
  • Play solo and ensemble repertoire, scales and technical material appropriate to the current standard.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for violinists at an intermediate stage, with at least one year of playing experience and confidence in reading music. Participation includes individual and group playing, discussion in English and regular practice between classes.

  • Regular practice outside class is expected, with 20 to 30 minutes recommended at least four times weekly.
  • Learners need to follow and contribute to discussions in English.
  • The course includes study and activities to complete outside class time.

Before you go

  • Bring a violin, bow, shoulder rest, rosin, cleaning cloth, tuning device, spare strings, pencil, eraser and notebook.
  • A good internet connection and a computer or tablet with webcam and sound are required.
  • The tutor will suggest or provide repertoire during the course.
