Violin and viola 3A

About this course

The course develops violin and viola technique through repertoire, scales and targeted exercises. Participants work on locating third position, shifting between first and third positions, bow control and an introduction to vibrato. Musical development includes major and minor scale patterns, arpeggios, aural skills and relevant music theory. Teaching combines tutor explanation and demonstration with group playing, individual practice, class discussion and work on personal development points. Participants play both independently and with the group, including rounds and songs, while developing their ability to read notation and improvise simple tunes and rhythms.

What you'll learn

• Shift between first and third positions and play in third position.
• Use the bow with greater control and produce a pleasant tone.
• Begin applying vibrato in playing.
• Play selected major and minor scales, arpeggios and music in related keys.
• Tune the instrument with an aid such as a tuner or piano.
• Read and improvise simple tunes and rhythms while maintaining an independent line in ensemble playing.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for intermediate players who have had at least two years’ tuition and are playing at a confident Grade 2 standard. Learners should read musical notation, use fluent fingering in first position and be ready for group playing, individual practice and class discussion. Regular practice outside class is expected.

• Requires playing in major and minor keys up to three sharps and two flats.
• Participants need to follow written and verbal instructions in English.
• The course combines ensemble playing with individual practice and development work.
• Regular practice is recommended, ideally for at least 30 minutes on five days each week.

Before you go

• Bring a violin or viola kit, including the instrument, bow, rosin and shoulder rest.
• Bring a pen, pencil, eraser and notepad.
• Some course music must be purchased for use across levels 3A, 3B and 3C, including the specified violin or viola books.
• Additional materials, including notation in treble clef for viola music and alto clef for violin music, are provided via Google Classroom.
