About this course

The course develops violin and viola technique through work on basic bow strokes, sound quality, second and fourth positions, vibrato and movement between left-hand positions. It also includes notation, scales and arpeggios, interval awareness for tuning, and listening in ensemble playing. Teaching combines whole-class playing, tutor accompaniment, pre-recorded accompaniment, individual playing and simple playing by ear. The tutor also addresses individual development points and relevant music theory.

What you'll learn

  • Apply a range of bowing techniques to improve control and sound production
  • Read notation and play in second and fourth positions
  • Shift between left-hand positions
  • Use vibrato where appropriate
  • Develop aural awareness of intervals for tuning and note finding
  • Play scales and arpeggios based on the Grade 4 syllabus

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for intermediate violinists and violists who can already play in first and third positions, read music and tune independently. Participation includes whole-class playing, individual playing and class discussions, with regular practice between sessions.

  • An approximate Grade 3–4 playing standard is expected
  • Learners should know major and minor scales up to three sharps and two flats in two octaves
  • Written and verbal instructions in English, as well as class discussion, are part of the course
  • A practice routine of at least 30 minutes, four to five times a week, is recommended

Before you go

  • Bring a violin or viola kit, including the instrument, bow, rosin and shoulder rest.
  • Bring a pen, pencil, eraser and notepad.
  • Music must be purchased for use across level 4A, 4B and 4C. Violinists use ABRSM Violin Grade 4 Pieces and Scales/Arpeggios; violists use More Time Pieces for Viola Book 2.
  • Other materials, including notation in treble clef for violin and alto clef for viola, are provided through Google Classroom.
