Wednesday Afternoon Printmaking: Collagraph in Depth

About this course

Participants make blocks, plates and prints while exploring collagraph construction with materials such as textured surfaces, found materials, gesso, wire and string. The course also introduces ways to combine collagraph with drypoint, chine collé and relief printing. Teaching combines demonstrations, presentations, group discussions, critiques and project work with one-to-one technical and critical advice. Learners use the studio equipment to develop plates and prints, with attention to different approaches and the decisions involved in printmaking.

Is this course right for you?

The course is open to beginners as well as learners with intermediate or advanced printmaking experience. No previous printmaking experience is necessary, although an interest in or experience of drawing or design may be useful. Teaching includes both group activities and individual guidance.

• Suitable for learners developing their own choice of printmaking technique
• Some presses and processes require physical strength, with tutor assistance available when needed
• Pregnant learners should discuss precautions relating to chemicals with the tutor

Before you go

• Bring pencils and pens, a selection of small brushes, a sketchbook or notebook, and a portfolio for taking work home.
• Basic studio consumables such as inks and solvents are included. Paper, etching plates and lino blocks must be purchased from the department.
• Health and safety guidance is provided, and learners must agree to follow the stated procedures.
• Some chemicals may be harmful during pregnancy; inform the tutor so appropriate precautions can be advised.
• The print studio is not wheelchair accessible and is located on the second and third floors. Learners with mobility issues should contact the department before enrolling.
• Payment for materials must be made in cash.
