Wednesday Morning Printmaking – Collagraph in Depth

About this course

Participants explore collagraph by constructing plates and printing from surfaces made with materials such as glue, carborundum, gesso, wire, string and found textures. The course also introduces related processes including drypoint, chine collé and relief printing. Teaching combines demonstrations, presentations, group discussions and critiques with individual technical and critical advice. Learners use the studio equipment to develop their own plates and prints, while considering different materials, surface effects and printmaking approaches.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners and more experienced printmakers working together. No previous printmaking experience is required, although an interest or background in drawing or design may be useful. Participation includes group discussions and critiques alongside individually guided studio work. Some presses and processes require physical strength, with assistance available from the tutor.

Before you go

• Learners may need pencils, pens, small brushes, a sketchbook or notebook, and a portfolio for taking work home.
• Most basic studio consumables, including inks and solvents, are included. Paper, etching plates and lino blocks are available to buy from the department, with materials payments made in cash.
• Health and safety guidance is provided, and learners must agree to follow the advised procedures.
• Some chemicals used on the course may be harmful during pregnancy; pregnant learners should inform the tutor for advice about precautions.
• The print studio currently has no wheelchair access and is on the second and third floors. Learners with mobility issues should contact the department before enrolling.
