Astronomy: a brief introduction

About this course

The course introduces the night sky, solar system, stars, nebulae, galaxies and exoplanets. Learners explore how to recognise planets and constellations, consider the broad scale and contents of the universe, and examine observing tools including telescopes, binoculars, planispheres and stargazing apps. Teaching combines presentations with visual examples, group work and discussion. The course also considers how to choose suitable astronomy equipment and where to find further information, including books, societies and subsequent study options.
