Ceramics: Wheel Throwing and Decorative Processes

About this course

Participants explore wheel throwing through practical workshops, guided development and group discussion. The course introduces techniques for making ceramic pieces and supports learners in developing their own ideas through the process. Decorative work includes slip trailing, wax resist, sgraffito, slips, underglazes and glazing. Activities are led by a tutor and combine demonstrations or discussion with supported practical work.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners aged 19 or over, from beginners to those with more experience. Participation includes tutor-led practical work and moderate physical activity, including wedging clay.

• Moderate physical fitness may be relevant because some activities involve wedging clay
• Learners with concerns about the physical activity can discuss guidance or assistance with the tutor

Before you go

• An apron or old shirt and a mask are needed for class.
• A sketchbook and pen may be useful.
• Clay and plaster are available to purchase from the tutor.
• The tutor will advise on which tools to purchase.
