About this course

Participants explore two- and three-dimensional mixed-media practices including paper collage, assemblage, decoupage, bricolage, installation, construction, image transformation, monoprinting, transfer and wall reliefs. Text, publications, found objects and recycled materials are considered as ways to generate ideas, represent subjects and communicate meaning. Practical work is placed alongside visual lectures and discussion of modern and contemporary international art. Exercises, demonstrations, group discussions and one-to-one tutorials support experimentation with materiality, juxtaposition, fragmentation, metaphor and image-making.

What you'll learn

  • Apply techniques associated with mixed-media painting, drawing, collage and assemblage.
  • Combine two- and three-dimensional approaches in mixed-media work.
  • Analyse relationships between materials, images, metaphor and meaning.
  • Contextualise painting, assemblage and collage within modernism and contemporary art.
  • Develop a working vocabulary of images, materials and found objects for further experimentation.
