About this course

The course combines workshops, short lectures, practical exercises, individual guidance and group critiques. Participants will work with manual camera controls, exposure, composition, colour and different light sources, while exploring digital capture alongside analogue processes. Projects cover genres including street photography, portraiture, studio lighting, architecture and panoramic photography. The course also introduces visual storytelling, creative briefs, copyright, business practice, image sequencing, digital printing and portfolio presentation. Independent project work is expected outside class, with opportunities to review work through presentations, critiques and one-to-one tutorials.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for people beginning photography as well as those who want to extend their skills through creative projects. A willingness to work independently outside class, take part in group presentations and critiques, and engage with technical and ideas-based work is expected. Basic computer competence is required for managing files.

Before you go

  • Participants must have access to a camera with full manual control, such as a DSLR or mirrorless camera.
  • Digital SLR cameras, tripods and lenses are available to use during class hours but cannot be borrowed between classes.
  • Anyone choosing to work with film should allow for film and processing costs.
  • A notebook or sketchbook is advised for notes and visual ideas.
