Combine Print Techniques – Monoprint and Silkscreen

About this course

The course introduces monotype and silkscreen as complementary processes. Participants develop monoprints using trace monotype, additive and reductive mark-making, recycled card and packaging, then combine these prints with silkscreen layers. Activities include preparing screens, making paper stencils, coating screens with photo-emulsion, exposing photographic or hand-drawn images, and using registration methods for overprinting. Teaching combines demonstrations, presentations, group discussion and individual guidance. Technical and critical feedback is provided throughout, covering ink handling, layering, registration and safe studio practice.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for complete beginners as well as learners with some previous printmaking experience who want to revisit techniques. An interest in, or experience of, drawing or design may be helpful. Participation includes group discussions alongside individual tuition and feedback.

• No previous printmaking experience is necessary.
• Suitable for learners renewing knowledge of one or more printmaking techniques.

Before you go

• Participants should bring their own tools and drawing equipment, such as paintbrushes and a sketchbook or notebook.
• Protective clothing and rubber gloves are advised.
• Most studio consumables, including ink, cleaning materials and solvents, are included. Paper, etching plates and lino blocks are not included and are available through the department.
• Health and safety guidance is provided, and participants must agree to follow the studio procedures.
• Some chemicals may be harmful during pregnancy or irritating for people with sensitivities. The tutor should be informed so that necessary precautions can be advised.
• The print studio has no wheelchair access and is located on the second and third floors. Learners with mobility issues should contact the department before enrolling.
