About this course

The course develops practical control of oil paint through exercises in colour mixing, tonal relationships, brush handling, mark-making and paint application. Learners work from still life and other simple subjects, considering accuracy, spatial awareness and composition. Alongside studio practice, the course introduces artists and art history as references for developing an individual approach. Learners experiment with the medium, reflect on problems and decisions in their work, and identify possible areas for further development. Safe studio practice, including workspace preparation and equipment cleaning, is also covered.
