What Intermediate (B1) French means

At B1 French, learners can deal with most everyday situations and explain experiences, opinions and plans in connected language.

  • Express an opinion

I think working from home is useful, although it can sometimes be quite isolating.

  • Explain a plan

Je veux améliorer mon français afin de pouvoir travailler à l’étranger l’année prochaine.

I want to improve my French so I can work abroad next year.

  • Tell a short story

Nous allions à la plage quand il s’est mis à pleuvoir, alors nous avons changé de programme.

We were heading to the beach when it started raining, so we changed our plans.

These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.

About this course

The course develops spoken and written French through topics including holidays, musical tastes and lifestyles. Learners revise pronouns, past tenses and adverbs, then work with the plus-que-parfait, past infinitive and present conditional to construct more complex sentences. Teaching focuses on listening practice, group speaking and strategies for communicating more independently without relying on notes. Vocabulary-retention activities and cultural material on Matisse and Gauguin, music and peace, and French-speaking-world superstitions are also included. Homework is recommended to consolidate classroom learning.
