About this course
This discussion-based German course uses opera as the subject for developing spoken communication. Participants talk about opera visits, recordings and related topics, then examine selected operas through their plots, themes, characters, historical background, pronunciation and music. The focus is on communication rather than formal grammar, although grammatical errors are corrected in context. Teaching includes pair and group work, role plays, games, presentations, hand-outs and audio-visual resources. Opera-specific topics vary by term and may include the work of the opera director, dramaturge or requisiteur.
