About this course
The course examines the lives, ideas and influence of Aspasia of Miletus, Hipparchia of Maroneia, Ptolemais of Cyrene, Sosipatra of Ephesus and Hypatia of Alexandria. It considers their social and intellectual contexts, alongside links to Socratic dialogue, Cynicism, Neoplatonism, mathematics, astronomy and musical theory. Teaching combines interactive activities, multimedia resources, close attention to philosophical work and group discussion. The course also introduces terminology used in philosophical analysis and may include occasional reading between sessions.
