What Intermediate (B1) Japanese means

At B1 Japanese, learners can deal with most everyday situations and explain experiences, opinions and plans in connected language.

  • Express an opinion

    在宅勤務は便利だと思いますが、時々孤独に感じることもあります。

I think working from home is convenient, although it can sometimes feel lonely.

  • Explain a plan

    来年海外で働けるように、日本語を上達させたいです。

I want to improve my Japanese so I can work abroad next year.

  • Tell a short story

    海へ向かっている途中で雨が降り始めたので、予定を変更しました。

It started raining while we were heading to the beach, so we changed our plans.

These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.

Lessons introduce common honorific and humble expressions, polite requests and formal patterns, including receiving verbs and polite instructions. Practice is organised around situations such as meeting someone for the first time, welcoming visitors, part-time work, customer service, emails, speeches and etiquette. The course includes recap work, topic-based lessons and a final review with presentations.

  • Use common honorific and humble expressions in Japanese.
  • Form polite requests and formal communication patterns.
  • Apply receiving verbs such as ていただく, くださる and さしあげる.
  • Use respectful language in workplace and everyday situations.
  • Deliver a presentation using relevant formal Japanese.
