About this course

The course develops techniques beyond the basics commonly found in machine-knitting manuals. Learners work with domestic single-bed machines to produce slip-stitch, tuck-stitch and several forms of lace, including punchcard, carriage and hand-tooling methods. They also examine how to select suitable punchcards for different stitch effects. Teaching combines tutor demonstrations with supported practical work, technical handouts, discussion, show and tell, group critique, and individual or small-group guidance. Learners are encouraged to compile a reference folder of techniques for further development at home.

What you'll learn

  • Create textured and more three-dimensional slip-stitch fabrics using punchcards
  • Produce tuck stitch manually with hold position and automatically with suitable punchcards
  • Apply tuck-lace techniques to fabric and decorative trims
  • Use a lace carriage and punchcards for lace and multi-transfer lace
  • Experiment with open lace effects using manual hand-tooling techniques
  • Select punchcards appropriate to different stitch techniques

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners who already have basic skills on a domestic single-bed knitting machine, including those who have not yet used punchcards. Participation includes practical machine work, demonstrations, discussion, show and tell, group critique, and tutor feedback.

  • Requires basic single-bed machine-knitting skills
  • Involves moving the carriage back and forth across the needle bed
  • Moderate fitness may be needed for handling the machine and carriage
  • Mobility or back-related support needs should be discussed with the college before enrolment

Before you go

  • The college provides single-bed standard-gauge and some chunky-gauge Brother punchcard machines.
  • A range of yarns, stitch-related graph paper, blank punchcards and punchers is available in the studio.
  • Learners need a notebook, pen and pencil. A small pair of scissors and a tape measure are useful.
  • Machines are stored in cupboards and may be heavy; the tutor can assist with setup and dismantling if back problems are disclosed.
  • The studio is accessible by stairs, lift and chair lift. Learners with mobility support needs can contact the college's additional learning support or Art and Design administration before enrolling.
