About this course

Participants explore English and American patchwork through traditional, template-free and fast-piecing methods, using both hand sewing and sewing machines. Classes combine explanation with practical work, allowing learners to begin an example such as patchwork, appliqué or quilting and develop it into a small sampler quilt. Topics include preparing fabric, applying basic design and colour principles, handling specialist tools safely, experimenting with techniques and methods, and binding the finished sampler.

Is this course right for you?

The course is open to learners with some or no previous experience, with new students working alongside ongoing students. The all-levels format covers fundamental techniques while allowing returning learners to develop their own projects in consultation with the tutor. Simple calculations and reading instructions in English may help with the learning activities.

Before you go

• Bring a basic sewing kit, including 100% cotton or specialist patchwork fabrics, needles, pins, scissors and matching or neutral-coloured thread.
• Approximately 1.5 to 2 metres of assorted fabric is needed for the quilt top, plus 1.5 metres for backing fabric. Recycled or new fabrics may be used.
• Bring a notebook, pencil and eraser. A folder for handouts may also be useful.
• Using specialist equipment and lifting or carrying sewing machines are part of the course.
• The class is on the first floor and is accessible by lift. Learners with mobility support needs should contact the relevant college support or Art and Design administration team before enrolling.
