About this course

The course examines major debates in Ancient Greek philosophy, beginning with the pre-Socratics and questions about permanence, change, unity and the nature of the cosmos. It then considers Socratic questioning, Plato’s Forms, the divided line and the allegory of the cave, before turning to Aristotle’s accounts of substance, causation, potentiality, happiness and the golden mean. Teaching is discussion-based, with participants exploring arguments, debating different positions and examining philosophical questions through critical problem-solving methods. Progress is considered through participation, group work, quizzes, questions and answers, homework, self-assessment and other formative and summative assessment.
