About this course

The course develops productive and receptive BSL across formal and informal contexts, including debates, meetings and specialist areas such as medicine, education, business, politics, law, media and technology. Participants examine BSL grammar and features, work with complex vocabulary and technical language, and practise following and presenting discussions, proposals and arguments. Teaching combines classroom discussion, group work, one-to-one discussions, receptive skills practice, role-play and simulations. Participants also watch video material and complete self-evaluations while using course resources through Google Classroom.

What you'll learn

  • Use complex BSL accurately across a range of work-related situations and registers
  • Maintain fluent BSL over extended periods within an area of expertise
  • Understand and use colloquial, idiosyncratic and technical BSL vocabulary
  • Follow and formulate discussions, proposals and arguments about theories or ideas
  • Explain key aspects of BSL grammar and linguistic theory
  • Evaluate BSL performance through video review and self-assessment

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for learners who have achieved a Level 4 BSL certificate or equivalent and have been recommended to progress. An interview assesses whether their BSL is at the appropriate level. Learners need literacy skills for reading assignment instructions and completing a practice linguistic essay and self-evaluations.

  • Deaf learners may be able to complete the practice essay in BSL rather than written English
  • Participation includes group work, classroom discussion, role-play and one-to-one discussions
  • The course leads towards consideration for progression to Level 6 BSL

Before you go

  • Bring a pen and paper.
