Producing a documentary: from development to delivery

About this course

The course examines documentary production from the initial idea through research, access, contributor work, filming, editorial review, post-production and distribution. Learners consider how documentary styles, audiences, visual language and storytelling choices shape a project, alongside the logistical, ethical, legal and professional decisions involved. Teaching combines documentary analysis, discussion, group exercises, editorial feedback, case studies and practical development tasks. Activities include developing and pitching ideas, planning shoots, reviewing material and considering funding, festivals, broadcasters and other distribution pathways. It is focused on production and editorial practice rather than technical camera or editing-software training.

Basic familiarity with filming and editing workflows may be beneficial but is not essential.
