About this course

Participants explore three-dimensional model-making through clay and plaster sculpture, armature construction, mould making and casting. The course introduces techniques including bas relief, coil and slab building, portrait busts, direct modelling and reverse sculpting. Teaching combines tutor demonstrations, practical studio activities and individual feedback. Projects include developing small models, making silicone rubber and plaster moulds, casting in materials such as Jesmonite, and experimenting with unconventional forms using techniques such as balloon sculpture.

What you'll learn

• Construct armatures using materials including wood, metal, foil and chicken wire.
• Create sculptural forms such as bas reliefs, stylised busts and animal figures.
• Mix plaster and produce single-piece and multi-piece moulds.
• Make silicone rubber moulds and cast a life cast using dental alginate and Jesmonite.
• Apply finishing techniques, including metallic effects on cast reliefs.
• Use plaster bandage, liquid plaster and other materials to refine bulk armatures.

The course is designed for beginners and is also intended for learners with some experience or those returning to making who want to refresh their skills. Participation involves practical studio activities, tutor demonstrations, group work and individual feedback.

Before you go

• Essential materials and equipment are included in the course fee.
• Participants should bring a sketchbook, pencils and a pen for sketching and note-taking.
• A camera or smartphone is useful for documenting work in progress.
• Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are required in the sculpture studio. Old clothes or overalls are recommended.
• Personal protective equipment is provided and must be worn when required.
