About this course
The course introduces the main controls and functions of a DSLR or mirrorless camera, including shutter speed, aperture, ISO, focusing and lens use. Participants examine composition, light and examples from established photographers, then apply these ideas to different photographic situations. Teaching combines demonstrations with active practice, practical tasks between sessions, and discussion of participants’ photographs. Tutor and peer feedback supports work on exposure, focus and composition, leading towards using the camera’s manual mode.

Is this course right for you?
The course is designed for complete beginners as well as learners with basic photographic knowledge who want to understand their camera’s controls more fully. It involves active practical work during sessions, tasks between sessions, and discussing photographs with the tutor and other participants.
Before you go
- Participants must bring their own DSLR or mirrorless camera with access to manual controls.
- Participants should have the camera manual, or access to it, for reference during the course.
- Course materials, including background notes and handouts, are available online through Microsoft Teams.
