About this course

The course follows the AQA Entry Level Certificate in Science, combining study of human health, materials from the Earth, energy transfer and efficiency. Learners examine topics including disease, hormones, metals, crude oil, fuels and home insulation. Practical work develops investigation methods such as designing experiments, taking measurements, recording and presenting data, and identifying patterns. Teaching combines classroom instruction, practical experiments and other activities, with online learning materials available for study outside class. Assessment includes written tests and assessed practical experiments completed during class time.

What you'll learn

  • Explain how diet, exercise, drugs, diseases and hormones relate to human health.
  • Describe uses of rocks, metals and crude oil, including environmental effects associated with fuels.
  • Explain energy transfer by heating, energy efficiency and methods of insulating homes.
  • Design experiments, make measurements or observations, record and present data, and identify patterns and relationships.

Is this course right for you?

The course is labelled Beginner and is intended for learners developing a foundation in science. Learners should be working at Entry 3 level in English and Maths. Participation involves classroom study, practical experiments, written tests and assessed practical work.

  • Learners complete at least three written tests in class.
  • Learners complete at least three different assessed practical experiments.
  • Successful completion can lead to a Level 1 or Level 2 Award in Science.

Before you go

  • Bring an A4 writing pad, pens, a pencil, a ruler and highlighters to each session.
