What Intermediate (B1) Spanish means

At B1 Spanish, learners can deal with most everyday situations and explain experiences, opinions and plans in connected language.

  • Express an opinion

Creo que trabajar desde casa es útil, aunque a veces puede resultar solitario.

I think working from home is useful, although it can sometimes feel lonely.

  • Explain a plan

Quiero mejorar mi español para poder trabajar en el extranjero el próximo año.

I want to improve my Spanish so I can work abroad next year.

  • Tell a short story

Íbamos hacia la playa cuando empezó a llover, así que cambiamos de planes.

We were heading to the beach when it started raining, so we changed our plans.

These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.

About this course

Spanish conversation is developed through debates, discussions, presentations and collaborative language activities covering contemporary affairs and cultural issues in Spanish-speaking countries. Learners also work with formal and informal texts, authentic audio and video, and a short literary text for analysis and comment. Grammar and syntax are introduced through the discussion topics and reinforced through written exercises. Preparatory reading and listening activities support collaborative follow-up work, while tutor, self and pair correction provide regular feedback on language use, pronunciation and intonation. The course is mainly online, with some in-person sessions.

What you'll learn

  • Interpret, summarise and comment on texts in formal and informal registers
  • Express, justify and develop opinions in discussions using appropriate linguistic structures
  • Discuss contemporary, cultural and social topics with increasing linguistic accuracy
  • Report and paraphrase spoken information while manipulating language accurately
  • Refine Spanish pronunciation and intonation
