About this course

The course develops core knowledge needed for progression to GCSE Maths, including arithmetic with integers, fractions and decimals, geometry, measures and mathematical reasoning. Learners work through interactive lessons, practice exercises and assessments, applying methods to mathematical problems and word problems. The course also addresses the English skills involved in understanding questions and writing clear mathematical answers, including grammar, vocabulary and structure. Online resources, assignments, video tutorials and quizzes are accessed through MS Teams and related websites.

  • Apply addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to integers, fractions and decimals.
  • Use the properties of shapes, angles, perimeter, area and volume in geometry and measurement problems.
  • Apply mathematical reasoning and problem-solving methods to a range of challenges.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners preparing to progress to GCSE Maths, including those who have recently completed Functional Skills. Although no specific prior qualification is usually required, learners are generally expected to have Functional Skills Level 1 Maths and English or a comparable Key Stage 3 education. Participation includes class discussions, practice work, assessments and study outside lessons.

Before you go

  • Bring pens, pencils, erasers, a sharpener or a tablet with an e-pen, and an exercise book or notebook.

  • Bring a maths or geometry set containing a compass and protractor.
  • Homework requires access to an internet-connected device.
