About this course

This introductory study day considers the rise of Islam, the life of the Prophet Muhammad and the sources used to document his teachings and wisdom, including the Qur’an and Hadith. It also explores how theological scholarship, Sufi literature and Islamic histories influenced the production of illustrated books under medieval Muslim rulers. Teaching combines lectures with slide images, group discussion and tutor-provided handouts. Some presentations include historical visionary depictions of the Prophet made for medieval Muslim patrons, which may be sensitive for some learners.
