About this course

The course traces the French Revolution from the Ancien Régime and the upheavals of 1789 through war, foreign intervention, the fall of the monarchy, the Reign of Terror and the Thermidorian Reaction. It concludes with the political developments that led to Napoleon. Teaching combines lectures with question-and-answer sessions, group and class discussion, and analysis of historical sources. Participants consider the roles of major individuals and groups, as well as the social, political and religious divisions that shaped revolutionary France.

This introductory course is intended for newcomers as well as learners with some background in the subject. No prior knowledge is expected, but participants should be willing to read short texts, analyse sources and contribute respectfully to group and class discussions. A good grasp of English is needed, along with openness to differing interpretations of historical events.
