About this course

Learners develop upholstery techniques by planning and completing an individual project using a small piece of furniture. The course covers safe use of workshop tools, accurate measurement and preparation of fabric and fillings, followed by webbing, padding, stuffing and fabric covering. Instruction combines demonstrations and guidance with project-based work, helping participants choose suitable tools and materials for their design. Learners also assess the finished piece in relation to its construction and appearance.

What you'll learn

  • Use upholstery tools, equipment and materials in line with workshop health and safety guidance.
  • Measure and prepare fabric and fillings for an individual upholstery project.
  • Apply webbing, padding, stuffing and fabric-covering techniques.
  • Select appropriate tools and materials for a specific project.
  • Plan, complete and evaluate an upholstery project with reference to technique and design.

Is this course right for you?

The course is designed for beginners and improvers, with guidance provided as learners work on an individual upholstery project. The all-levels format suggests that participants can develop their skills from their current starting point, rather than following a single fixed level of instruction.

  • Work is centred on an individual piece of furniture.
  • Projects may include small furniture such as a chair or stool.
