How to choose

What kind? Beginner basics, then portrait, studio lighting, street and documentary, nature, and editing. Pick the topic first.

How long? A taster or one-day class is a way to try photography. A weekend or short course is a skill block. Book a long foundation only if you’re sure about the time and cost.

London Evenings suit classes after work, and weekends suit studios and photo walks. Venues cluster around Waterloo and Farringdon (City Academy and Photoion), Brick Lane (LIoP), Shoreditch (London School of Photography), Keeley Street (City Lit) and Granary Square (UAL). Check camera requirements on each class page.

Where you can learn photography in London

  • City Academy: Short photography courses and tasters in London, often at Photoion Studio (Waterloo) and Farringdon.
  • City Lit: London's largest adult education provider
  • LIoP: Independent photography school on Brick Lane
  • London School of Photography: Practical photography workshops and professional courses in Shoreditch
  • UAL: Creative short courses at University of the Arts London

Frequently asked questions

I’m a complete beginner. Which photography class in London should I start with?

Start with a beginner digital class or a taster. Skip studio, fashion and documentary intensives first.

Do I need my own camera?

Often yes, a DSLR or mirrorless. Check each class page, because some classes provide kit.

Should I book a taster, a short course, or a long course?

A taster is a few hours to try photography. A short course is a skill block. A multi-week foundation is a bigger commitment of cost and time.

Should I start with portrait, studio or street photography?

Start with a beginner class first, then fill the gap you care about, portrait, studio or street.

Can I find evening or weekend photography classes in London?

Yes. Use the Evening and Weekend filters on this page.
