What Pre-intermediate (A2+) French means

At A2+ French, learners can connect simple sentences, give reasons and manage a wider range of familiar situations.

  • Explain a preference

Je préfère voyager en train parce que c’est plus confortable et que je peux lire.

I prefer travelling by train because it is more comfortable and I can read.

  • Handle a small problem

La chambre est très froide. Pourriez-vous vérifier le chauffage ?

The room is very cold. Could you check the heating?

  • Describe an experience

L’année dernière, j’ai visité Lyon et j’ai beaucoup aimé son architecture.

Last year I visited Lyon and really liked its architecture.

These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.

About this course

The course develops the four language skills through interactive activities and work on autobiographical experiences, lifestyles, the future, new technologies, sport and stages of life. French grammar includes revision of past, present and future tenses, relative pronouns, hypothetical and complex sentences, and language for interacting with others. Teaching includes spoken-language listening practice, group speaking activities, vocabulary-retention advice and learning strategies for communicating more independently. Cultural content covers French autobiographical novels and new sports, alongside discussion of French laws that have affected society.

  • Use past, present and future tenses with greater control

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners with approximately two years of recent French study or equivalent A2-level knowledge. The Pre-intermediate (A2+) label indicates that it develops beyond fundamental language skills. Participation includes speaking and listening activities, including work in groups, and the course progresses at a slower pace than standard courses.

  • Learners should already be able to describe where they live, compare past and present, express preferences and share life experiences.
  • The course includes structured group speaking and listening practice.
  • It follows a slower pace than the provider's standard French courses.

Before you go

  • Teaching and learning resources are provided through Google Classroom.
  • The course is based on units 3 to 4 of Entre Nous 2. Learners are advised to wait until after the first session before buying the textbook and exercise book.
