What Elementary (A2) German means

At A2 German, learners can handle simple routine exchanges and describe familiar aspects of everyday life.

  • Describe your routine

    Normalerweise fahre ich mit dem Bus zur Arbeit und komme um sechs nach Hause.

    I normally go to work by bus and return home at six.

  • Make a simple plan

    Möchtest du am Samstagnachmittag ins Kino gehen?

    Would you like to go to the cinema on Saturday afternoon?

  • Talk about the recent past

    Gestern habe ich mit Freunden zu Abend gegessen und danach sind wir spazieren gegangen.

    Yesterday I had dinner with friends and then we went for a walk.

These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.

About this course

This course develops German for situations involving homes, hotels, clothing, celebrations and gifts. Learners practise discussing prices and locations, comparing city and country life, describing appearance and clothing, offering advice, and handling a conversation in a clothes shop. Teaching centres on spoken communication through pair and group work, role plays and games, supported by presentations, hand-outs and audio-visual material. Grammar work covers prepositions, dative and accusative cases, relevant verbs and pronouns, comparisons, superlatives and adjective endings after an indefinite article.

The course is intended for learners at Elementary (A2) level who have studied German for at least one year recently. Participation involves spoken interaction, pair and group activities, role plays and games. Homework is highly recommended for consolidating the class work.
