What Beginner (A1) German means

At A1 German, learners are beginning to use familiar words and simple sentences in predictable everyday situations.

  • Introduce yourself

Ich heiße Anna. Ich wohne in London.

My name is Anna. I live in London.

  • Order in a café

Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee, bitte.

I would like a coffee, please.

  • Ask for directions

    Entschuldigung, wo ist der Bahnhof?

Excuse me, where is the station?

These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.

About this course

This course develops foundational German for everyday situations, including introductions, personal information, ordering food and drinks, and using numbers, colours and common phrases. It introduces sentence structure, negative forms, formal and informal language, the alphabet and basic pronunciation. Teaching combines interactive lessons with listening exercises, reading comprehension, conversation practice, group work and audio-visual resources. German food, drink and customs are also explored. Progress is reviewed through classroom observation and activities rather than an exam, with homework set after each session.
