What Elementary (A2) Mandarin means

At A2 Mandarin, learners can handle simple routine exchanges and describe familiar aspects of everyday life.

  • Describe your routine

    我平时坐公共汽车上班,六点回家。

I normally go to work by bus and return home at six.

  • Make a simple plan

    你星期六下午想去看电影吗?

Would you like to go to the cinema on Saturday afternoon?

  • Talk about the recent past

    昨天我和朋友吃了晚饭,然后去散步了。

Yesterday I had dinner with friends and then we went for a walk.

These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.

About this course

The course develops spoken Chinese through conversations about personality, homes, technology and language learning, with practice activities leading to review and presentations. Learners continue using Pinyin while being introduced to 50 Hanzi, alongside memorisation approaches and recognition of characters from earlier study. Grammar work covers degree complements, adjective and verb reduplication, direction and location, number expressions, frequency and degree adverbs, and the use of tone adverbs such as 就. Lesson topics include introductions, describing people and homes, convenience foods, comparisons and improving spoken Chinese.

What you'll learn

  • Conduct conversations on personal characteristics, introductions, homes and everyday technology
  • Recognise and begin to memorise 50 introduced Hanzi using suggested memorisation methods
  • Use degree complements and reduplicated adjectives and verbs in common contexts
  • Apply expressions for direction, location and numbers in Chinese sentences
  • Use frequency adverbs, degree adverbs and tone adverbs such as 就
  • Present and review spoken Chinese through structured conversation practice

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners who have progressed beyond the earliest stage of Chinese and are encountering more natural conversations. It suits those able to manage survival-level conversation, with knowledge of around 500 words described as ideal. The course continues material from earlier elementary study, including Pinyin and previously introduced Hanzi.

  • Around 500 words of Chinese is described as ideal, rather than stated as a formal requirement
  • The course follows earlier elementary material and introduces further Hanzi
