10-week Introduction to Wheel Throwing Course

About this course

Participants spend each session at the wheel, building technique through repeated practice. The course introduces clay preparation and centring before developing throwing skills through cylinders, cups and bowls. Later work covers trimming, turning, pulling and attaching handles, followed by surface decoration using slip and sgraffito. Studio safety and equipment are introduced at the outset. The structure allows learners to revisit core throwing techniques before progressing to new forms and finishing work.

The course is intended for complete beginners who want to focus specifically on wheel throwing, as well as learners returning after a general pottery course. No previous experience is required. Participation is centred on repeated individual practice at the wheel.

Before you go

• An apron should be brought.
• Tuition, clay, selected studio glazes and use of studio equipment are included.
• Participants may bring their own tools or obtain a starter toolkit at the studio.
• Finished pieces are bisque-fired, glazed and fired again before collection.
