About this course

The course concentrates entirely on wheel work, giving participants time to practise centring and throwing before progressing to cylinders, cups and bowls. Sessions also cover trimming, pulling and attaching handles, and preparing pieces with slip and sgraffito decoration. Early teaching includes wedging, studio safety and the use of tools and materials. Participants can practise existing techniques and develop new work during the course, with finished pieces moving through bisque firing, glazing and a final firing.

What you'll learn

  • Prepare clay for wheel work by wedging
  • Centre clay and throw basic cylindrical and rounded forms
  • Trim leather-hard pottery and finish foot rings
  • Pull and attach handles
  • Apply slip and sgraffito surface decoration

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for complete beginners who want to focus specifically on the wheel, as well as learners returning from a general pottery course. Its all-levels label indicates a broad entry point, and the source explicitly states that no previous experience is needed.

  • Suitable for learners returning after a general pottery course who want focused wheel practice
  • Every session is centred on wheel work rather than hand-building

Before you go

  • Tuition, clay, selected studio glazes and use of studio equipment are included.
  • Finished pieces are bisque-fired, glazed and fired again before collection.
  • Participants should bring an apron.
  • Personal tools may be brought, or a starter toolkit can be obtained at the studio.
