About this course

The course combines weekly technique demonstrations with individual guidance and time for self-directed projects. Learners develop more complex wheel-thrown forms, including bottle shapes, belly forms and plates, while exploring collaring, throwing batts and advanced trimming. The tutor discusses each learner’s aims and can adapt technique suggestions to their chosen projects. Early work focuses on bottle forms, followed by increasingly independent making. Later sessions concentrate on final trimming, tidying foot rings and preparing finished pieces for bisque firing. Studio health and safety are covered at the beginning.

What you'll learn

  • Refine control when throwing more complex forms on the wheel
  • Apply collaring techniques to develop bottle and other forms
  • Construct belly shapes and plates using the wheel
  • Use throwing batts when making larger or more complex pieces
  • Carry out advanced trimming, foot-ring finishing and bisque preparation

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for intermediate potters who are already confident centring clay, throwing cylinders and bowls, and trimming. Its tutor-led but self-directed format combines individual guidance with independent project work, so learners will develop their own pieces while receiving targeted instruction.

  • Not intended for complete beginners
  • Requires confidence with centring, cylinders, bowls and trimming
  • Includes independent project work alongside individual tutor guidance

Before you go

  • Clay, a selection of studio glazes and use of studio equipment are included.
  • Firing is charged separately.
  • Learners may bring their own tools; an eight-piece starter toolkit is also available from the studio.
