19th Century French Literary Classics

About this course

The course explores influential 19th-century French writing, including works by Chateaubriand, Hugo, Balzac, Flaubert, Baudelaire, Louise Michel and Verlaine. Readings encompass novels, short stories and poetry, with attention to the political, cultural, historical and philosophical contexts that shaped them. Teaching combines interactive lectures on each text, its author and themes with round-table and small-group discussions. Participants examine the set works in detail and consider their place in French literary culture. All texts are studied in English translation.

The course is intended for beginners and does not require previous knowledge or experience of literature. Participation involves reading set texts, preparing outside class and discussing responses in larger and smaller groups, including listening to other learners’ interpretations.
