2 Day Home Maintenance

About this course

The course combines practical tasks with theory on maintaining and repairing a home. Participants work with hand tools, power tools, fixings, sealants, plasterboard, tiles, paint and basic plumbing and electrical fittings. Activities include repairing tiled surfaces, preparing woodwork, applying paint, changing sockets and light fittings, wiring a plug, addressing blocked wastes and handling radiators. Teaching also covers choosing suitable fixings and paint types, repairing a tap washer, and cleaning and maintaining tools. Instructors can discuss individual building projects or plans during the course.

What you'll learn

• Use basic hand tools, power tools and common fixings for household tasks.
• Repair tiled surfaces, including replacing a damaged tile and refreshing grout.
• Cut and fix plasterboard and use decorating fillers and silicone sealants.
• Carry out basic plumbing maintenance, including tap washer repairs, waste blockages and radiator removal and refilling.
• Complete basic electrical tasks such as changing sockets and light fittings, fitting a dimmer switch and wiring a plug.
• Prepare woodwork and apply paint using suitable paint types, brushes and rollers.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners with little or no previous experience who want an introduction to general home maintenance and basic building-trade skills. Participation is practical as well as theory-based, with learners carrying out a range of household repair and decorating tasks.
