2 Days: Beyond the Spine: Creative Bookbinding

ByPutney School of Art and Design

Bookbinding

All Levels

An all-levels course in experimental book structures, combining demonstrations with guided studio sessions and creative bookmaking.

About this course

The course examines how binding structures, materials and sequencing can influence meaning, narrative and the reader’s interaction with a book. Participants will work with folded, stitched and non-traditional formats, considering the book as a functional object, sculptural form or archive of ideas. Teaching combines practical demonstrations with guided studio work. Projects may incorporate image, text, drawing, print, photography or mixed media, while experimentation with scale, paper, thread, found materials and printed matter supports the development of handmade books or prototypes.

  • Construct book structures using different materials, scales and formats
  • Examine how structure, sequencing and rhythm affect narrative and reader interaction
