About this course
The course introduces the theory and practical methods used in domestic electrical installations. Participants work with consumer units, ring and radial circuits, lighting arrangements, switching, fused connection units and outside lighting, alongside principles such as bonding, earthing, cable sizing and electrical loading. A substantial part of the course focuses on inspection and testing. This includes safe isolation, continuity checks, insulation resistance, polarity, earth fault loop impedance, prospective fault current and RCD testing. Participants also practise completing test certificates and applying fault-finding techniques, including live testing.
What you'll learn
- Apply Ohm's Law and calculate fuse ratings, electrical loading and cable sizing.
- Install consumer units, ring circuits, radial circuits and domestic lighting and switching arrangements.
- Use safe isolation procedures and carry out basic electrical tests.
- Identify earthing systems and explain the roles of bonding and special-location requirements.
- Carry out inspection and testing tasks including continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, earth fault loop impedance, prospective fault current and RCD testing.
- Complete electrical test certificates and use basic fault-finding techniques.
Is this course right for you?
This is a beginner-level foundation course combining classroom theory with practical installation, inspection and testing work. The level label indicates an introductory focus, but the source does not state whether previous experience is required. Participants should expect to engage with circuit wiring, live testing and fault-finding exercises.
- Covers both introductory electrical installation and inspection and testing content.
- May suit learners intending to progress to electrical qualification courses.
- Includes practical work on domestic circuits as well as electrical theory.
