About this course
The course introduces ceramic making through a combination of hand-building and wheel work. Participants practise preparing clay by wedging, then develop pinching, coiling, slab building, joining and scoring techniques. Later sessions introduce centring clay on the wheel, forming cylinders, cups and bowls, trimming thrown pieces, using hump moulds and pulling handles. Decorative work includes slips and sgraffito, followed by an introduction to glazing. Sessions begin with new techniques taught as a group, before participants practise independently and develop several pieces.
