8-week Introduction to Wheel-Throwing Course

About this course

The course focuses exclusively on wheel-throwing rather than hand-building. Participants learn to prepare clay, centre it on the wheel and develop cylinders, cups and bowls, with repeated practice across the course. They also work on trimming, forming and attaching handles, and refining foot rings. Later sessions introduce slip decoration and sgraffito. Teaching combines demonstrations with guided practice, allowing participants to revisit core throwing techniques before progressing to finishing and decoration.

The course is intended for complete beginners who want to focus specifically on the wheel, as well as learners returning after a general pottery course for more focused wheel practice. Each session involves sustained participation at the wheel.

Before you go

• Clay, a selection of studio glazes and use of studio equipment are included.
• Firing is charged separately. Finished work is bisque-fired, glazed and fired again before collection.
• An apron should be brought.
• Participants may bring their own tools; a starter toolkit is also available to purchase at the studio.
