About this course

The course begins with clay preparation, studio safety and hand-building, covering pinching, coiling, slab building, joining and scoring. It then introduces wheel-throwing techniques including centring, pulling walls, forming cylinders, cups and bowls, followed by trimming and turning. Hump moulds, handles, slip decoration and sgraffito are also covered, with an introduction to glazing. Sessions introduce techniques as a group before allowing time for individual practice and ongoing work. The sequence builds from foundational clay work to making, refining and decorating several pieces across hand-building and the wheel.

What you'll learn

  • Prepare clay using wedging and apply basic studio safety and etiquette
  • Construct forms using pinching, coiling and slab-building methods
  • Join clay securely using scoring and joining techniques
  • Centre clay on the wheel and form basic cylinders, cups and bowls
  • Trim and turn thrown pieces, including work made with hump moulds and handles
  • Decorate ceramic pieces using slips and sgraffito

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners at all levels, including people with no previous experience. Its structured progression from hand-building to wheel work suits those seeking an introduction with time to practise between new techniques, while requiring less commitment than a longer course.

  • No previous experience is needed
  • Suitable for learners wanting to try both hand-building and wheel-throwing
  • Group demonstrations are followed by individual practice
  • Offers a shorter course format than the provider’s 12-week option

Before you go

  • Tuition, clay, glazes and use of studio equipment are included.
  • Firing is charged separately.
