About this course

The course focuses exclusively on throwing at the wheel. Early sessions use structured exercises to refine technique and cover evenly formed cylinders, footed bowls, plates and lidded vessels. Participants are also introduced to repetition throwing, pulling handles and forming lips. As the course progresses, teaching shifts towards individual projects and questions about personal development. The small-group format allows guidance alongside time for independent work, with exercises intended to address inefficient or habitual throwing methods.

What you'll learn

  • Throw cylinders evenly and efficiently.
  • Form and turn footed bowls, plates and lidded vessels.
  • Apply repetition-throwing methods to repeated forms.
  • Pull handles and create lips on thrown vessels.
  • Develop individual throwing projects through guided practice and targeted questions.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners and intermediate learners working in a small group. Sessions combine teacher-led exercises with time for individual projects and questions, so participation includes both guided practice and self-directed work.

  • Classes are limited to eight participants.
  • The course is focused entirely on wheel throwing.

Before you go

  • Participants may glaze work for collection.
  • If they choose to continue practising at the wheel in the later sessions, pieces may instead be bisque fired for collection.
  • An introduction to glazing and surface decoration is included.
  • Course participants have booking access to optional drop-in sessions for additional studio practice.
