About this course
The course traces developments in Western sculpture through close analysis of selected works by ten significant practitioners. Sessions consider formal and subject analysis alongside the materials, processes, styles and aims evident in sculptural practice. Lectures and slide presentations introduce artistic contexts, including academic priorities, avant-garde influence and modernist approaches such as abstraction and expressionism. Group discussions extend the analysis to the social, political and cultural circumstances surrounding the works. Handouts are provided to support learning.
